Do New Jersey mechanics need a license?
No. Unlike home-improvement contractors or auto body shops, New Jersey does not license or register general mechanical repair shops or individual mechanics. The credential that exists is ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, which is voluntary and earned by individual technicians who pass exams in specific specialties (brakes, engines, electrical, etc.). Ask a shop directly which of their techs are ASE-certified — there's no state registry to check it against, so you're relying on the shop's word and the ASE logo/cert display in-store.
What's the difference between a general repair shop and an auto body shop in NJ, licensing-wise?
General mechanical repair (engines, brakes, transmissions, tires, diagnostics) requires no state license in New Jersey. Auto body and collision repair is different — those facilities need a license from the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (limited, full-service, or heavy-duty auto body license). If a shop does both, only the body/collision side is state-licensed; the mechanical side isn't.
How do I know if a shop is overcharging me?
There's no official price registry, but the practical check is: get a written itemized estimate, ask what the shop rate is per hour (Hunterdon shops commonly run in the range noted below), and get a second quote for anything over a few hundred dollars.
