- Appliance Command LLC (Lebanon (mailing) / Annandale (Clinton Twp.)) — Owner-operated, actually headquartered in Hunterdon County (Annandale), 30+ years on the same brands, and the only shop in this set with a clean 5.0 Google score at real review volume — call here first for a straight diagnosis.
- Service Unlimited (Lebanon) — Longest continuous operating history in the county (over 50 years on Main St, Lebanon) and consistent praise for accurate diagnosis on high-end brands — good second call, especially for older or premium appliances.
- Ihling's TV & Appliances (Clinton) — In-county storefront on Main Street since 1960, still family-run, straightforward pricing — the local generalist for anyone who wants to walk in and talk to a person rather than book online.
Why trust this page
We pull credentials from the official registries ourselves and print the date next to every status — appliance repair is not a licensed or registered trade in New Jersey. NJ's Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration (checked via the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs registry at njconsumeraffairs.gov/hic) covers work performed on real property (kitchens, additions, roofing, etc.); repairing a standalone appliance is repair of personal property and falls outside that registration requirement, per NJ Division of Consumer Affairs HIC FAQ guidance. The meaningful credential in this trade is manufacturer factory-authorization status (e.g., Whirlpool Factory Certified Care, KitchenAid Certified Service Specialist, Sub-Zero/Wolf authorized servicer) — verify directly on the manufacturer's own dealer/servicer locator page rather than a state registry.. Picks are editorial judgment on the checkable record: years in the trade, complaint patterns, review consistency, real presence in the county. No company paid to be listed, none can pay to become a pick, and when a pick has a weak spot we print it. Here are the full rules.
Every appliance repair company we checked
Hunterdon County has real, established local supply for appliance repair — five genuinely in-county operators (Appliance Command in Annandale/Lebanon, Service Unlimited and Ihling's in Lebanon/Clinton, Appliance Master and Service-Tech in Flemington), several with decades of continuous operation on the same street. Beyond that core, the category is padded with adjacent-county and national-franchise coverage (Dan Marc out of Essex County, Mr. Appliance's Middlesex/Somerset franchise, Sub-Zero/Wolf specialists based in Bergen County) that lists Hunterdon towns as service area without a local address — treat those as commute-in coverage, not local presence. Skipped as lead-gen shells with no fixed local address or real reviews: Vieras Scheibner (a referral aggregator dispatching unnamed third-party techs across multiple counties) and several templated "applianceor.com" / "theappliancerepairmen.com" directory-style sites that repeat the same boilerplate across every NJ town.| Company & services | Based in | Credential | Registry status | BBB | Reviews (as reported) |

Registry status comes straight from the state's verification system on the date shown, and you can rerun any number there yourself in about two minutes. Review scores are what the named platforms report and we have not audited them. BBB grades as of July 2026. "Based in" is the registered address city, which sometimes differs from where a company says it operates. An active registration is the floor, not an endorsement; the picks we would actually call are above.
Before you hire
- Ask what brands the technician is factory-authorized on before booking — for appliances still under manufacturer warranty (Whirlpool, Sub-Zero, Wolf, KitchenAid, etc.), only a factory-authorized repair keeps the warranty valid; a generalist can void it even if the fix works.
- Get the diagnostic fee and whether it's waived if you proceed with the repair, in writing or text, before the truck rolls — several NJ shops in this category have had billing complaints where the diagnostic quote didn't match the final bill.
- Ask for a parts-lead-time estimate up front, not after the tech leaves — the most common complaint pattern in this trade locally is 'told 3 days, actually 2+ weeks' for a special-order part, which matters most on a single working refrigerator or the only washer in the house.
- Since NJ does not license or register appliance repair businesses, there's no state registry to check — years in continuous operation at the same local address and manufacturer authorization letters are your actual credential check, not a license number.
- Confirm the warranty on labor and on parts separately (many shops offer 90 days on parts but less or nothing on labor) and get it on the invoice — verbal promises of a warranty aren't enforceable if the company disputes it later.

Questions neighbors actually ask
Does an appliance repair company in NJ need to be licensed?
No. New Jersey's Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration covers work done to real property — kitchens, additions, roofing. Fixing a refrigerator or washer is repair of personal property, not real property, so it falls outside HIC and there's no state license or registry for general appliance repair. The credential that actually matters is manufacturer factory-authorization (Whirlpool, Sub-Zero, Wolf, KitchenAid, etc.) if your appliance is under warranty.
Will using a non-factory-authorized repair shop void my appliance's warranty?
It can. If the appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, most brands require repairs to go through an authorized servicer or the warranty on that repair (and sometimes the whole appliance) is void. Once the manufacturer warranty has expired, any competent independent shop is fine — factory authorization stops mattering.
How fast can I actually get someone out for a broken refrigerator in Hunterdon County?
Several of the in-county shops (Appliance Command, Service Unlimited, Ihling's, Service-Tech, Appliance Master) are locally based and typically quote same-day-to-a-few-days depending on season; national franchise dispatch (Mr. Appliance, Sears Home Services) can take longer since they're routing from outside the county. The bigger variable than 'how fast someone shows up' is parts lead time once they diagnose the problem — ask about that up front.
